Career Pathways is a new graduation requirement
for students in Portland Public Schools. The purpose of Career
Pathways is to provide students with opportunities to explore
what they want to do beyond high school. Realizing that some
students already have strong ideas about where they are headed,
it is designed to assist students in evaluating their individual
strengths, interests, talents and skills. Being part of the
educational setting, Pathways helps students discover, explore
and refine their strengths and skills for their life beyond
high school.
Pathways provides a required credit for students
beginning with the 2009 graduating class. Students need to
participate in Pathways class activities or contact the coordinator
for an alternative way to get their credit if they are not
enrolled in the classes in which the work is being done.
Cleveland students have the opportunity to focus
on five broad based career pathways as they consider their
high school course of study and postsecondary options. These
areas are:
- Arts & Communication
- Business & Management Systems
- Health Services
- Human Resources
- Natural Resource Systems
To learn more about each pathway, view the Career
Pathways student worksheets (a 3.5 mb pdf which may
take a moment to load).
The following is an overview of what Pathways
will look like at Cleveland High School in the upcoming 2007-2008
school year:
- 9th graders will accomplish
their Pathways work in their Academy
classes. They will also participate in the ACT Explore.
You can find information on this test at www.actstudent.org/explore/
- 10th graders will do a
unit in their health classes on goal setting including looking
at plans beyond high school. As students forecast for 11th
grade, they will choose a Pathway from which they will draw
three of their electives. The Pathways requirement and the
electives associated with each of them are on pages 1 through
10 of the
CHS Course Guide.
- 11th graders will work
more extensively on resume writing and mock interviews in
junior English classes.
On all levels, students will document Career
Related Learning Experiences (CRLEs) through activities
in their classes. In addition, students will be required to
engage in a culminating senior project i.e.
a job shadow, internship, career experience portfolio and/or
job research opportunities during their senior year beginning
in 2008-09.
