Cleveland High School is renowned for
its high academic
standards in all content areas, multiple opportunities
in the arts, and a warm and accepting school climate. Cleveland
offers a comprehensive array of classes to meet the needs
of our broad student population.
To enrich our students' first year in high school
experience, the Freshman
Academy program was developed, preparing freshmen
for success in a rigorous high school environment while developing
a sense of community by sharing common classes and teachers.
Cleveland High School is one of two Portland
Public Schools authorized to offer the International
Baccalaureate Diploma Program (IB), a comprehensive
two-year curriculum for motivated students. All Cleveland
students have the opportunity to enroll in individual IB classes,
complete an IB certificate in one of the six subject groups,
or earn a full IB diploma.
Cleveland's Business
Focus Option is a four-year program leading its
graduates toward college business schools and professional
careers. The curriculum includes business concepts, computer
applications, handling personal finances, participation in
Future Business Leaders of America, and working in and managing
the student-run store.
Cleveland also offers Dual
Immersion programs. Currently, an advanced Spanish
Immersion curriculum is available for students completing
eight years of the Spanish Immersion program at Atkinson Elementary
and Hosford Middle School. This unique specialized four-year
program focuses on students developing fluency and using the
Spanish language in interdisciplinary studies. A Chinese
Immersion program will be added in 2008-2009.
An English
Language Learners program is available, currently
meeting the needs of 60+ students speaking more than 18 languages.
Comprehensive Special
Education classes are also available, including
a program for the hearing impaired.
Selected Cleveland students have the opportunities
to participate in Advanced
Learning Options, available at local universities,
for academically gifted and motivated students.
